ASESINOS EN SERIE: ROSMARY Y FRED WEST
Rosmary y Fred West fueron un matrimonio que se convirtió en el tándem de asesinos en serie más crueles de la Historia reciente de Inglaterra.
Fred West nació en el seno de una familia humilde en Much Murcle (Inglaterra) en septiembre de 1941.
En su juventud tuvo dos accidentes que pudieron condicionar su futuro al dejarle daños cerebrales irreversibles: un accidente de moto que le dejó en coma varios días y una caída al huir de un local que estaba en llamas.

Tras los accidentes, el comportamiento de Fred cambió y comenzó a tener problemas con la Ley hasta que, en 1961, fue acusado de dejar embarazada a la hija de unos amigos que contaba tan sólo con 13 años de edad.
A penas un año después, se casa con Rena Costello, la cual era prostituta y estaba acusada de varios robos. Rena llegó al matrimonio embarazada de otro hombre y, más tarde, ambos tuvieron una hija común tras este primer bebé.
Fred, en el año 1964, conoce a Anna McFall y se convierten en amantes. Rena decide abandonarle y se va a vivir a Escocia, dejando sus hijas viviendo con Fred y su nueva compañera sentimental.
La carrera homicida de Fred comienza en el año 1967, momento en el que Anna se queda embarazada y le pide a Fred que se divorcie y se case con ella. Fred la mata, la desmembra y la entierra en el jardín en el que tenían ubicada la caravana en la que vivían.
En el año 1969 conoce a la que será su nueva esposa y su compañera, la joven de Devon nacida en el seno de una familia muy problemática en 1953, Rosemary Letts .
A los pocos meses de conocerse ocurren dos acontecimientos, Rosemary se queda embarazada y Fred entra en prisión, dejando a Rosemary a cuidado de las dos hijas del matrimonio anterior con Rena Costello.

Es en este período de tiempo, en el que Rosemary asesina a la hija mayor, Charmain y, durante un permiso penitenciario de Fred, desmembran y entierran el cuerpo cerca del primer cadáver, el de Anna McFall.
Los West se mudan en 1972 de Minland Road a la casa en la que ocurrieron el resto de secuestros, torturas, violaciones y homicidios que protagonizaron en los siguientes años juntos, situada en el número 25 de Cromwell Street (Gloucester, Inglaterra), tristemente conocida como "la casa de los horrores".
Cabe resaltar, que tanto Rosemary como Fred, tenían apetitos sexuales exacerbados que calmaban con prácticas sexuales sadomasoquistas, bondage, y otras prácticas similares, como Fred observando cómo Rosemary practicaba la prostitución con otros hombres.
Sin embargo, pronto dieron el salto a prácticas en las que las protagonistas no deseaban participar. Al mudarse, convirtieron el sótano en una especie de templo del horror, en el que bajaban a sus propias hijas para que Fred pudiera abusar de ellas mientras Rosemary las inmovilizada o abusaba también brutalmente de ellas. También consintieron que otros hombres abusaran de ellas mientras los padres grababan estas prácticas y participaban en el abuso.
Es el 24 de febrero de 1994 y la policía británica se persona en la casa de los West con una orden judicial de registro. Tras varias desapariciones sospechosas, en las que Rosemary y Fred parecen ser siempre el nexo de unión, deciden poner en marcha una investigación, también movidos por un comentario que varias personas les han oído decir a los West para amedrentar a sus hijos: "come o te enterramos en el patio, como a tu hermana Heather (desaparecida en 1987); vístete rápido o vas con tu hermana Heather debajo del suelo del patio, etc"
Lo que encontraron los investigadores fue uno de los hallazgos más terroríficos de la Historia británica de finales de siglo: 9 cadáveres de mujeres jóvenes y niñas, con signos de brutalidad y abusos sexuales, enterrados entre el jardín y el sótano. Esto les llevó a encontrar otros tres en la antigua casa de los West y a reconstruir los hechos.

En otoño de 1972 Rosemary y Fred recogen a la autoestopista de 17 años Caroline Owens y la contratan como niñera. Unas semanas más tarde ella deja el trabajo y se va de la casa. Sin embargo, unos días más tarde, la vuelven a recoger haciendo autoestop y la secuestran. La llevan a su casa, la atan, la violan y la sueltan bajo la firme promesa de no denunciarles a la policía. Caroline, que sólo lo ha prometido para que la dejaran salir con vida, les denuncia a la policía. Estos hechos, fueron resueltos tras un juicio, con una multa que tuvieron que pagar por ser declarados culpables de asalto con daños corporales y asalto indecente en enero de 1973.

La siguiente víctima fue Lynda Cough, una costurera de 19 años que desapareció el 19 de abril de 1973 en las inmediaciones de la casa de los West. Su cuerpo fue hallado desnudo y desmembrado. Algunos huesos nunca se encontraron, y los que aparecieron estaban atados con cuerdas, cinta adhesiva y tela alrededor.
Carol Ann Cooper fue vista por última vez en noviembre de ese mismo año, cuando fue a visitar a su abuela que vivía cerca de la casa de los West. Su cuerpo fue hallado en la casa de Cromwell Street desnudo, desmembrado y decapitado.
Otra de las víctimas fue Lucy Partington, de 21 años y estudiante de la Universidad de Exeter. En los días libres correspondientes al período de Navidades, Lucy fue a Cromwell Street a visitar a una amiga de la infancia. Una vez más, el cuerpo fue hallado decapitado y con un cuchillo de cocina entre sus restos mortales.
Los restos de otra estudiante, de nacionalidad suiza, fueron encontrados en la casa. Su nombre era Therese Siegenthalen y estudiaba Sociología en la ciudad de Londres. En el momento del secuestro y posterior tortura, abuso y asesinato, se encontraba haciendo un viaje por el país.
Shirley Hubbard, de 15 años, que había desaparecido en noviembre de 1974.
Otro de los cadáveres del sótano, que se halló decapitado, desmembrado, con cuerdas alrededor del cuerpo y una tela cubriendo el cráneo, pertenecía a Juanita Mott, de 18 años de edad.

Años después, en 1977 se dio el caso de una superviviente de 15 años que no acudió a la policía hasta que no se hicieron públicos los hallazgos de la investigación casi 20 años más tarde, en 1994. Esta superviviente, de la cual no ha trascendido su identidad, contó cómo fue secuestrada en la parada del autobús y golpeada hasta dejarla inconsciente. Al despertar, se encontró en una habitación, desnuda y atada, en la que se encontraban otras dos niñas también desnudas. Se dieron una serie de abusos por parte de Rosemary y Fred hasta que la víctima pudo escapar y volver al orfanato en el que se encontraba.
En 1978 los West acogen a una huésped, Shirley Anne Robinson de 18 años de edad, la cual pronto se convierte en amante de Fred. Al dejarla embarazada, decide asesinarla en su octavo mes de embarazo. Su cuerpo fue hallado en la casa de Cromwell Street decapitado y desmembrado, con los restos del feto en su interior.
La penúltima víctima hallada e identificada fue Alison Chambers, de 16 años, y residente en un orfanato de la zona.

Por último, Rosmary y Fred West asesinaron a la primera de las hijas que habían tenido en común y que llevaba 16 años sufriendo abusos y torturas tanto físicas como psicológicas. La enterraron desnuda en el jardín de su patio trasero en el año 1987. Su nombre era Heather Anne West.
Tras el descubrimiento de los cuerpos, se descubrió que los siete hijos todavía con vida de la pareja, sufrían todo tipo de abusos y malos tratos y fueron separados de la pareja y destinados a distintas casas de acogida donde se les dio tratamiento y terapia.
Fueron detenidos y acusados de múltiples cargos entre los que se encuentran el de abusos sexuales a menores, abusos sexuales, violación, tortura, secuestro y, por supuesto, homicidio.
Fred West nunca fue juzgado, ya que se suicidó en prisión esperando el juicio el 1 de enero de 1995. Rosemary West, fue condenada a cadena perpetua en 1995 y, a día de hoy, sigue cumpliendo condena en la Prisión Low Newton, en la inglesa ciudad de Durham.

In his youth he had two accidents that could determine their future by leaving irreversible brain damage: a motorcycle accident that left him in a coma for several days and a fall to flee a building that was on fire.
After the accident, Fred's behavior changed and started having problems with the law until 1961, when was accused of impregnating a friend's daughter who was only 13 years old.
Barely a year later, he married Rena Costello, who was a prostitute accused also of several robberies. Rena came to marriage pregnant by another man and, later, the two had a common daughter.
Fred, in 1964, met Anna McFall and become lovers. Rena decides to leave him and go to live in Scotland, leaving his daughters living with Fred and his new girlfriend.
Fred's homicidal career starts in 1967, at which time Anna is pregnant and asks Fred to divorce and marry her. Fred kills her, and buries the dismembered corpse in the garden, in the same place where they had located the convoy in which they lived.
In 1969 he met the girl who will become his new wife and his partner, she was born in Devon into a very troubled family in 1953, Rosemary Letts.
A few months after they met two events occur, Rosemary becomes pregnant and Fred enters prison, leaving Rosemary taking care of two daughters from a previous marriage to Rena Costello
Within this period, Rosmary kills Fred's eldest daughter, Charmain and Fred, during a permission, dismembers and buries the body near the first corpse, Anna McFall's.
The West moved from Minland Road into the house in where took place the rest of kidnappings, tortures, rapes and killings in the following years. It was located at 25 Cromwell Street (Gloucester, England), notorious as "the house of horrors".
Significantly, both Rosemary and Fred, had exacerbated sexual appetites that were satisfied by having sadomasochistic sex, bondage, and other similar practices, such as Fred watching Rosemary practicing prostitution with other men.
However, soon they evolucionated to practices in which the actors didn't want to participate. When they moved, they turned the basement into a kind of temple of horror, where they forced to their own daughters in such horrible situations as Fred raping them as they were immobilized by Rosemary who also brutally abused them. They also agreed that other men abused them while the parents recorded these practices and participated in the abuse.
It is the February 24, 1994 and the British police go to the house of the West with a court warrant. After several suspicious disappearances, in which Rosemary and Fred always seem to be the link, they decide to launch an investigation, also moved by a comment that many people have heard from the West to intimidate their children: "Eat or I buried you in the yard, as we did with your sister Heather (disappeared in 1987); dress your self fast or you will with your sister Heather to the courtyard, etc. "
What the researchers found was one of the scariest findings in British history of the century: 9 bodies of young women and girls, with signs of brutality and sexual abuse, buried in the garden and basement. This led them to find other three in the former home of the West and to reconstruct the events.
In the fall of 1972 Rosemary and Fred pick up the 17 years old hitchhiker Caroline Owens and hired as a nanny. A few weeks later she leaves them and goes home. However, a few days later, they again pick her up hitchhiking and they kidnap her. They take her home tie her up to rape and release her under the firm promise not to go to the police. Caroline, who only promised to let her out alive, reportes them to the police. These facts were resolved after a trial, with a fine they had to pay for being convicted of assault with bodily harm and indecent assault in January 1973.

The next victim was Lynda Cough, a seamstress of 19 who disappeared on April 19, 1973 in the vicinity of the house of the West. His body was found naked and dismembered. Some bones were never found, and those who appeared were tied with rope, tape and fabric around.
Carol Ann Cooper was last seen in November of that year, when she went to visit her grandmother who lived near the home of the West. His body was found in the house of Cromwell Street naked, dismembered and decapitated.
Another victim was Lucy Partington, 21, a student at the University of Exeter. On days corresponding to the period of Christmas, Lucy went to Cromwell Street to visit a childhood friend. Again, the body was found decapitated with a kitchen knife in his remains.
The remains of another student, a Swiss, were found in the house. His name was Therese Siegenthalen and studied sociology at the City of London. At the time of the kidnaping and subsequent torture, abuse and murder, he was making a tour of the country.

Another of the bodies in the basement, was found decapitated, dismembered, with bands around the body and a cloth covering the skull belonged to Juanita Mott, 18 years old.

Years later, in 1977 the case of a survivor who was 15 years old when the events occured but she didn't go to the police until it was made public the findings of the investigation, almost 20 years later, in 1994. The survivor, which has not transcended his identity, told how she was kidnapped in the bus stop and beaten into unconsciousness. Upon awakening, he found himself in a room, naked and bound, in which two other girls were also bare. a series of abuses were given by Rosemary and Fred until the victim was able to escape and return to the orphanage where she was.
In 1978 the West host to a guest, Shirley Anne Robinson 18 years old, who soon becomes Fred's lover. She got pregnant, so he decides to murder her in her eighth month of pregnancy. His body was found in the house of Cromwell Street beheaded and dismembered, with the remains of the fetus inside.
The penultimate victim was found and identified Alison Chambers, 16, who lives in an orphanage in the area.

Finally, Rosemary and Fred West killed the first of the daughters they had in common and who had been for 16 years suffering abuse and torture, both physical and psychological. She was buried naked in the garden of his backyard in 1987. Her name was Heather Anne West.
After the discovery of the bodies, it was discovered that the seven children still alive, sons an daughters of the couple, were suffering all kinds of abuse and ill-treatment so they were separated from the couple and were sent to shelters where were given treatment and therapy.
They were arrested and charged with multiple counts among which are the child sex abuse, sexual abuse, rape, torture, kidnapping and abuse, of course, murder.
Fred West was never tried because he committed suicide in jail awaiting trial on 1st January 1995. Rosemary West was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995 and, today, is in Prison Low Newton, in the english city of Durham.
